Choose a perfume for baby
In general, the term "fragrance" refers mainly to men or women fragrances, and it can be surprising to make it appropriate for children and babies. There are, however, eaux de toilette and eaux de parfums adapted to these age groups. These perfumes can help to awaken the olfactory sense of these future adults.
Eau de senteur for babies
Eau de senteur is a type of perfume that does not contain alcohol at all, and is therefore the most suitable for babies' sensitive skin. A solvent mixed with the scented concentrate replaces the alcohol, and can give a somewhat cosmetic, even slightly "sticky" impression at times.
The first baby perfumes
The first baby perfume was Baby Dior in 1970, which followed the start of children's fashion. However, the one that was an immense success was L'Eau de Bonpoint, which is still being distributed today. A whole range of baby perfumes and cosmetics has now been developed at Bonpoint. This fragrance has been a success with young children, but also with mothers, and particularly with a clientele of young Asian women.
Ptisenbon of the brand Tartine et Chocolat de Givenchy (1987) was also an international success. Once again, children were not the only ones to wear this eau de toilette. Following this success, other brands launched their baby perfumes, such as Petit Guerlain, now discontinued in favour of Baby Guerlain, in the exclusive range.
The regulation of baby perfumes
In recent years, regulations concerning baby fragrances have become much stricter, and very few ingredients are now allowed in these fragrances. Indeed, contrary to certain preconceived ideas, very few natural materials are allowed in these perfumes. For example, no natural citrus notes are tolerated in a fragrance for little ones. Indeed, natural products can create intolerances or allergies.
The formulation of a baby perfume is therefore quite complex for the perfumer, who is limited to a very restricted list of components. Restricted means one, two or three natural ingredients maximum. The challenge for the perfumer is to succeed in giving a great naturalness to the baby perfume, while orchestrating the formula with very few natural materials or even without them. Synthetic products can also cause allergies, but within the framework of the strict regulation concerning baby perfumes.
In addition, very small children have a fragile and thin skin. Thus, an ingredient, even present in small quantities, may be present in high concentrations in the baby's body, simply by skin contact (given the small size of babies).
Which scents to choose for children and babies?
Perfumes for children and babies are always scents that evoke the smell of an infant. Its fragrances must therefore always be very fresh and sweet, musky-based notes (like white musks), with a citrus effect (without using any citrus), haloed with abstract flowers. A perfumer must have great skill in the art of composition to orchestrate perfumes in a light, subtle and airy way.
Tips for choosing baby perfume
Ideally, before choosing a baby perfume, you should check the composition of the product with mobile applications such as Yuka. This way, you can make sure that no allergenic raw materials are present in the fragrance you are about to buy. Check, among other things, that the fragrances are hypoallergenic, phthalate-free, paraben-free and phenoxyethanol-free.
We advise you never to apply the fragrance directly to a child's skin (cf. Testing a perfume), and even less so to a baby's skin. In addition, the fragrance, which you will have checked for its perfect innocuousness, can be sprayed on clothes only, from 3 years old.
Moreover, from the age of 7 / 8, children will start to want a fragrance that will make them feel like they are entering the world of teenagers. You should always go for fresh and light scents, but which may then contain fruity notes (cf. Fruity Notes).
